Conservation and Heritage

We are delighted to have undertaken a strategic scope of works on Skellig Michael a UNESCO World Heritage site to aid in the creation of safe passage to the Western side of the Island, including the Historical lighthouses for OPW staff, consultants, and in time the broader public. This was an exciting and challenging project due to the geology, topography, environmental constraints, live environment, logistical considerations and that the location is one of only 2 UNESCO World Heritage sites in Ireland. Our scope required the fabrication and on-site installation of 45-Tonnes of structural steel, in the form of crash decks; 30m3 of concrete foundation; all located at three separate sites along the most precarious sections of Lighthouse Road. To enable the works significant pre-planning and methodology development was required to mitigate the risks and manage the logistics satisfactorily. Bespoke equipment including a gantry crane, transport bogies, excavation techniques, mixing and steel erection equipment were designed, tested and fabricated to achieve our scope. It was very pleasing to see the unusual constraints of this extraordinary project being assessed and overcome with such ingenuity by our project team.
