The Great Blasket Island is a world renowned Island of significant natural, heritage and conservation status situated 3.5miles southwest of the Slea Head Peninsula in Dingle, Co. Kerry, Though previously inhabited the Island is now home to many ruins located adjacent to the works area.
During winter 2013 as a consequence of prolonged heavy swells and storm conditions structural damage occurred to the slipway. Our brief was to carry out structural repairs and a complete overlay to the slipway structure.
Due to the off-shore location, tidal fluctuations and maritime nature of the work area many interesting safety, logistical and engineering challenges were posed to the site team. In addition the slipway had to remain open to the public and boatmen for the duration of the works.
For greatest efficiency & to maximise the tidal window concrete deliveries were carried out using a helicopter from the mainland. Meticulous planning and co-ordination were required to deliver the project safely and to the quality required.
Elsewhere costal protection measures were undertaken to reinforce the foreshore with a gabion wall.
