Scholarlee consists of 40-student beds set out in ten apartments over four storeys. Facades have been selected and designed to integrate the building into the adjoining architecture of Fitzgerald Park and Redcliffe house. Enabling works required the demolition and site clearance of the existing disused dwelling at Fort Marion. Adjoining Mardyke Walk an OSI BM and protected brick piers were carefully removed and recorder and are integrated into the final construction ‘as was’. To overcome geo-technical challenges the building is founded on 600mm CFA piles to 18m depth. The frame is a composite RC and masonry build, with a brickwork outer leaf. Access is from a protected courtyard which also leads to external bins stores and laundry room at ground level. Internally the building is arranged around a central stairwell with a lift serving all floors. ECKL were pleased to work with the client and design team to offer and develop value engineering options for cost and time savings.
