The restoration of Bryce House Garnish Island involved implementing a series of conservation measures on a phased basis, over an extended period, to protect and preserve a distinctive and iconic part of Ireland’s heritage. This project presented several unique and interesting challenges to Eamon Costello (Kerry) Ltd, not least the island location and tide dependence which the team overcame with aplomb.
Works covered a vast spectrum of conservation and refurbishment practices, including removing, boxing and transporting 100 year old steel casement windows to a UK refurbishment specialist, by Eamon Costello(Kerry) ltd operatives. Timber sash windows were removed to Eamon Costello(Kerry) Ltd joinery workshop where in-house staff de-glazed, repaired, repainted and re- glazed windows with ‘Slimlite’ double glazing.
Extensive re-roofing included careful removal and re-use of the Westmoreland slate. All cast iron rain water goods were removed, refurbished and refitted. At this time two chimneys were dismantled & lead trays installed to allay dampness, and were subsequently re-built to traditional stone lime mortar specification - finished with a lime/sand flaunching to the top.
Internally Eamon Costello(Kerry) Ltd was obliged to comply with specific measures to comply with a bat derogation license application. Following laying of a new floor slab internal lime plastering was undertaken to traditional recommended specification.
Other works involved removal and re-placing of old Bath stone capping, installation of a Zinc Roof to Sarcophagus structure; Authentic restoration & refurbishment of wrought iron & cast elements along with removal of a plaster ceiling and replacement with lime plaster on hi-rib, along with the removal and reinstatement of corninces.
Externally, slipway remedial works including strengthening, pinning and restraining and over concreting were undertaken. Elsewhere mains cabling to the island perimeter and 5No wrought iron gate repairs were carried out.
